3 ways to get to know your neighbours

More than half of Britons describe their neighbours as “strangers” and 73% of Britons don’t even know their neighbour’s names. Yes we were shocked as well! In fact, we did a quick poll around the Hiyacar office and there were only 2 people in our team who weren’t familiar with their neighbours. Okay, maybe we are a little unique as we all work in the sharing economy but it’s still an interesting stat.

Below are 3 ways you can get to know your neighbours:

1. Nextdoor

A few of us at Hiyacar are signed up to Nextdoor, it’s a great platform to stay up to date with what’s going on in your neighbourhood. You can use it to find a local handyman, a last minute babysitter for your kids or just to make some new friends. They’ve recently launched their #HelloNeighbour campaign which is tackling loneliness by encouraging people to spend 1 hour a week helping a neighbour in need.

2. Mush

Mush is a brilliant app connecting mums in their local communities. If you’ve recently had a baby and you’re struggling to meet your neighbours, you could use Mush to meet other mums who live near you. The “Tinder for Mums” is definitely one we’d recommend if you want to make some new friends.

3. Car sharing

Car sharing is a great way to get to know your local community. If you have a car you don’t use all the time, you could become a micro-entrepreneur and make money by lending it to someone in your local area who needs to get around. If you need a car, instead of hiring from a corporate giant, you can help keep money in your community by using your neighbour’s car. By sharing cars, communities live smarter, happier, healthier and wealthier.

There are so many benefits that come with getting to know your neighbours, from sharing milk to sharing cars to just making some new friends. It would be great to see more Brits embracing the sharing economy and getting to know the people in their local communities.
