A Groundbreaking Wireless Public EV Charging Trial, with Electric Vehicles Provided by Hiyacar

Hiyacar is playing a crucial role in a groundbreaking wireless electric vehicle charging trial, taking place in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. The project, led by electric vehicle charging infrastructure innovator, char.gy, with funding from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and Innovate UK, was provided with 10 Renault Zoes, supplied by Hiyacar, to trial and showcase this innovative wireless induction pad charging technology.

This trial of char.gy’s wireless induction pad, is paving the way for a future of EV charging free of cables and is the first of its kind available to the general public in the UK. It is a highly collaborative effort, with support and input from Buckinghamshire Council, Milton Keynes Council, London Borough of Redbridge, the University of Warwick, the Open University, IPT Technology, and Hiyacar.

As well as supplying the electric vehicles for use in the trial, fitted with aftermarket induction charging kits, the trial will also make use of Hiyacar’s on-demand bespoke car sharing insurance, keyless QuickStart technology, hassle-free app-based booking system and automated driver verification infrastructure.

This groundbreaking E-car club, wireless charging trial taking place in Marlow, will greatly improve urban wireless EV charging. This new charging solution, developed by char.gy, in partnership with Warwick University and IPT Technology, will mean that those without access to private charging via garages, driveways or other off-street parking options will be able to charge their vehicles efficiently and cable-free!

Hiyacar x char.gy - charging pad

It works via an electrical induction charging pad installed in the ground, in Marlow’s case, into a dedicated parking spot - meaning no charging cable, potentially hazardous for other road or pavement users, and no lamppost charging! As existing electric vehicles don’t have wireless charging capabilities built in, Hiyacar has supplied electric vehicles, with aftermarket induction charging kits retroactively fitted. These vehicles are available to book through the Hiyacar platform, membership-fee free, for £1 per hour or £5 per day (plus insurance).

The Marlow E-car club trial is the first of many to be trialling and showcasing this groundbreaking wireless charging infrastructure, with nine trials to follow; find out more about those on the OSRIC Demonstrator website.
