Driving your hire car in South London

Car hire in South London is simple, and driving should be too. With the number of great hiyacar vehicles available to rent nearby, you’ll be ready and raring to get on the road. Fortunately, it just so happens that South London is home to an extensive road system - making it fun and easy for you to hop behind the wheel of your hired car and start exploring this amazing part of the city with all of its hidden gems.

Hire a car in South London and drive through some historic locations, moving seamlessly between busy city centres and peaceful village-like settings. South London’s boundary, though hard to define, covers 11 boroughs - from Richmond in the South West to Bexley in the South East - and has a great system of roads to connect them all.

One of South London’s major road systems is the South Circular. Running from the Woolwich Ferry in the East to the Chiswick Flyover in the West, the South Circular makes up the southern part of the London ring road. A 33 km road connecting a sequence of urban streets, the South Circular runs closer to Central London than its northern counterpart but is just as useful in allowing you to drive around all of South London and beyond. The South Circular takes you to a number of beautiful south london locations; drive through the Woolwich Common and on to Academy Road, where you can see the old Royal Military Academy, or even carry on through to the suburban roads in Forest Hill and drive beyond Clapham Common, pass the A316 and over Kew Bridge where you can take in a great view of the river.

Once you’ve seen enough of South London life, close connections on to the M4, M25 and a number of other major roads presents a great opportunity to experience some amazing locations further outside of London. Whatever you feel like doing, it’s easy to hire one of our south london cars and head out on to the road to start exploring!

Places to discover in and around South London by car

To some, car hire in South London may seem like a daunting prospect and its reputation for congestion is enough to put anyone off driving. However, South London is full of hidden treasures that can’t always be easily reached by public transport. Unfortunately, only a small portion of London’s underground system lies in the South London region, and it’s not as extensive as the tube lines north of the river. With this in mind, being able to hire a car gives you the unrivalled opportunity to visit some of the most amazing South London attractions.

Experience Nature

If you love the outdoors, or maybe just fancy spending some time in nature, South London is home to a whole host of green spaces. Situated on the west end of the south circular, Kew Gardens is famous for its large and diverse botanical collection and is a must-visit for any plant lover. However, if you just want to relax, Kew Green is a large open space that extends to around 30 acres. Known for holding cricket matches, the green is also overlooked by a number of historic buildings and makes for the perfect spot to sit and take in the atmosphere.

That said, if you want to venture outside of the busy South Circular and into slightly more peaceful surroundings, there are loads of beautiful spots further out from the city centre. Car hire in south west London gives you the perfect opportunity to visit a variety of amazing green spaces on the outer edges of London. Drive out to Richmond Park which, at 2500 acres, is the largest royal park in the capital. Visit the Isabella Plantation, partake in some cycling, or maybe just spend your time trying to count each one of the 600 deer that roam free around the area - whatever takes your fancy, Richmond Park is an amazing place to spend the day.

Take in some Culture

There’s a number of great cultural hotspots in South London. If you feel like learning a thing or two, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory in Greenwich are great choices. Or, alternatively, jump on to the south circular to visit the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill - a fascinating museum specialising in anthropology, natural history and musical instruments. Learn about human history with its range of interesting exhibits, including a unique aquarium and a rather extensive collection of stuffed animals.

If this doesn’t take your fancy, South London is also home to a large number of unique historical attractions. For Royal History buffs, Eltham Palace, an unoccupied former royal residence, is situated in the south-east London region. At Eltham, see how refurbished 1930s art-deco style mixes with the original medieval and tudor decor in a stunning piece of history. That said, if you’re looking for something even grander, drive out west to Hampton Court Palace where you can learn about the life and times of Henry VIII within the walls of his most famous residence.

Home of Sports

London has become something of a centre for sporting events, and South London is no exception. Twickenham, the home of the England Rugby Team, is the largest dedicated rugby venue in the world, with a capacity of up to 82,000 people. Once you’ve finished taking in the grandeur of the venue, how about a small wander around the World Rugby Museum where visitors can learn about the game’s history - from its beginnings all the way through to present day.

However, if tennis is more your game, visit The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon - home to the most famous tennis tournament in the world. Here, you can view the courts and follow in the iconic footsteps of some of your favourite players, or if you’d prefer, you can even just take a moment to experience the history and long-standing traditions of the tournament in the on-site Wimbledon museum.

Outside of South London

Head out of London and drive south to the coast where you can spend a weekend or so relaxing in one of the great southern seaside towns. Brighton is just a short hour and a half drive on the motorway and is very easily reached from a south London base. There, you can experience the delights of the famous Brighton pier or have a browse around The Lanes whilst enjoying the crisp sea air. If it’s a sandy beach you’re after, however, Margate in the south-east is the perfect place to get away for a little while. For the thrill seekers, try paying a visit to Margate’s Dreamland fun fair where you can enjoy vintage rides, street food, art and much, much more.

Ultimately, one of the best things about car hire in South London is the options it opens up. Use your rented car to explore the hidden delights of the city, or even just to escape for a weekend. Whatever it is, you can find something for everyone to enjoy.
