Know the area you are driving around

Most of Clapham sits in Borough of Lambeth, with the postcode SW4. However some better known areas like Clapham Common are part of the next borough, Wandsworth. In 2011 the population was placed at 40,850 by the cencus.

There are no other areas associated with Clapham, such as Clapham South, which has no fixed boundaries, and Clapham North. Clapham North runs either side of Clapham road, following a border with Stockwell that moves all the way up to Brixton. Over its history, Clapham wasn't always how it is today. Below we have covered a brief history for you to get to know the area you're hiring a car in!

To go back in time, there is a Roman road that ran from London to Chichester in the 1st century, Clapham High Street is along this exact route. If you go to the entrance of the old Clapham Library within the Old Town, there is a Roman stone that points towards the old road that used to be there. This was actually discovered in 1912 by building work.

One of the first mentions of Clapham in history is within the Doomsday Book, referencing a 'Clopeham'. Back then, this area was approximately 5 acres and owned by Goisfrid de Mandeville. If we move forwards through time to the 17th century, large country houses have started to be built in the area. This construction will continue up until the early 19th century, mainly being made by wealthy merchants from London.

To fast forward in time again and to enter the 20th and 21st centuries, Clapham was transformed by the introduction of railway. It gave the town direct access to central London, effectively making Clapham a commuter suburb for the main city.

The architecture of the town is hugely varied, from Georgian, Victorian, 60s blocks and contemporary design. So with this brief background of Clapham, make sure you pay attention whilst driving around.
