About Hiyacar

Hiyacar is a UK-based car-sharing platform and a CoMoUK accredited car club, with the mission of connecting drivers to cars when and where they want them. Hires start from just one hour, up to 10 days.

On the website or app, vehicle owners can list their car or van for rent and Hiyacar helps connect them with local drivers, as well as providing the bespoke insurance cover for the hire.

In addition, Hiyacar operates a fleet of vehicles as a car club in London, Bristol, and Edinburgh. The company also makes its platform available to groups, including communities and companies that wish to share cars with a select group, such as staff, or the public at large.

First car shared on Hiyacar: February, 2016, by CEO and founder, Graeme Risby

Company name and office location: Hiyacar Limited, 100-106 Leonard St, London, EC2A 4RH

Founders: Graeme Risby (CEO) and Rob Larmour (COO), who first met aged 16 whilst they were both working at the meat counter of the local supermarket.

How it Works

For owners

Vehicle owners list their car or van by registering on the platform and uploading photographs and providing other information about the vehicle. Once the listing is complete, Hiyacar publishes the vehicle for hire on the site. Hiyacar provides insurance for the duration of the hire through a partnership with Abacai insurance.

For drivers

Users can search for vehicles in the app or on the website however they must pass eligibility checks and automated driver verification checks prior to booking. Verification typically takes 2-3 minutes using automated checks on licence, address, and a few other basic details. Drivers that have a high number of licence points or other risk indicators will not pass verification.

Once verified, users can book a vehicle directly on the platform. Hiyacar operates a loyalty scheme that rewards repeat users with lower insurance prices.

For companies, communities, and other groups that want to share

Share an existing fleet of cars or vans

Hiyacar enables fleet owners to share vehicles with a specific group of people, such as a local community, or with the general public.

Examples of organisations that have done this are Blenheim Palace, and Swale Council.

Car club provision

As a CoMo-accredited car club, Hiyacar provides access to vehicle hire in London, Bristol, and Edinburgh from 1 hour up to 10 days. An example of this is the EV scheme that was set up in 2022 in partnership with Hackney Council

Impact

To date, Hiyacar has helped over 150,000 people to access affordable vehicles when and where they want them.

Offering easy and affordable access to local cars helps reduce individual car ownership meaning fewer cars on the road clogging up our streets. In the UK, a single car club car will, on average, replace 20 private cars in the UK

'20 private cars replaced by each car club vehicle in the UK in 2021'

'116,811 - estimated total number of cars removed from the road in the UK by currently active car club members'
