Bromley has changed a lot over its history and with its origins over 1000 years ago there's quite a lot to talk about. The very origins of Bromley go back as far 862, with a mention of 'Bromleag' in an Old English Charter. In 1158, Bromley actually belonged to the county of Kent, where it was a market town. There were two key developments that drove Bromley's growth, the first that it was situated inline with a coach route and rail line in 1858, the second was when the community switched from one focused around farming to retail.
Within the 20th century, after being caught by the growth of London's suburbs, the town's population increased hugely. In 1903 it was officially incorporated as a municipal borough. When Greater London was formed in 1965, Bromley was then made a London Borough.
Fast forward to the current date, Bromley prospers from two railway station, Bromley South and Bromley North Station. As well as having a vibrant high street, the Glades shopping centre receives over 1 million people a year.
