Driving your hire car in North London

To some, the sprawling city and its reputation for congestion makes hiring a car in North London seem like a daunting prospect. But, in reality, it’s one of the best places in the whole city to drive around and explore.

With the sheer number of vehicles available, car hire in North London is easy; and with the well-connected systems of roads available to drive on, you won’t be short on options for new and exciting places to visit. North London’s unofficial border currently stretches from the edge of the City of London’s financial district all the way to Greater London's boundary with Hertfordshire, so it’s fair to say that it covers a substantial portion of London’s map. Luckily for us, this also means it’s home to a number of major road systems; making it the ideal place to hire a car and go for a drive.

The North Circular is the 41 km long road around Central London which, together with the South Circular, make up the London ring road. The North Circular extends from Chiswick in west london to Woolwich in the east, and connects a number of London suburbs along the way- with junctions connecting to the M1 and then on to the M25, it’s the perfect route for any cars wishing to travel in and out of North London.

If you fancy a trip into the more populated urban areas, take a drive through trendy Islington and visit the famous Chapel Market. From here, you can even take a 20 minute drive further into North London’s centre and have a wander around Camden. However, if you crave a more peaceful experience, you’re equally as able to venture out past the North Circular towards the northern fringes of London and beyond. After all, North London's road connections to major motorways provides a great opportunity to explore the rest of the country.

Places to discover in and around North London by car

London is a busy and eclectic city- just two of the reasons why it attracts so many visitors every year. Of course the public transport systems in and around the city are iconic, but hiring a car in North London presents the perfect opportunity to visit some of London’s best-loved locations, especially the ones which are slightly more removed from other transport links.

Hampstead Heath

One of the most popular attractions in North London, Hampstead Heath is a beautiful patch of green situated merely 6km from Trafalgar Square.

Its 790 acres of open space allows for various family oriented amenities, including swimming ponds, athletic tracks and even a zoo. That said, if you’d prefer, you could always just sit back and take in a view of the London skyline on Parliament Hill, by the north east corner of the Heath.

Alexandra Palace

Alexandra Palace is an iconic entertainment and sports venue. Originally opened in 1836 for Victorian Londoners, “Ally Pally” has grown into one of the best loved venues in London. The free parking spaces and relatively few nearby transport links makes it particularly attractive to visitors who wish to come via car, but there’s so much more to it than this. With a garden centre, boating lake, children’s play areas and a farmer’s market most Sundays, there’s loads of things to participate in around the site.

RAF Museum

For History buffs, the RAF Museum in North West London is the perfect spot. Take a trip through the history of aviation and the Royal Airforce, whilst viewing the impressive collection of real-life RAF planes past and present. Just a 30 minute drive from Central London, the RAF Museum is removed from the hustle and bustle of the city’s centre, but close enough to be able to drive to nearby London amenities.

Stadiums and Arenas

North London has a particularly good selection of stadiums with rich histories. Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in Holloway allows fans to come inside and see displays of the club’s memorabilia accompanied by the story of its past in the Arsenal Museum. Likewise, if you’re hiring a car around North West London, why not drive up to the iconic Wembley stadium to take a tour and follow in the footsteps of some of the biggest names in music and sport.

Going Outside of North London

Hiring a car in North London gives you the chance to escape the city for a while. Drive out past the North Circular and on to the M1 to Watford where you can visit the Harry Potter Studios, allowing you to see behind the scenes and learn the production secrets of one of the most beloved film series or all time. If this isn’t to your liking, drive north east and experience the calm and natural surroundings of Epping Forest, an expansive area of woodland that’s perfect for anything from a leisurely stroll through nature to a full-on camping weekend. Ultimately, the beauty of driving in North London is that you can find something for everyone.
